Situated on a high promontory which dominates the magnificent valley of the River Dordogne, the Royal Bastide of Domme was founded in the 13th CenturyThe main entrance to the walled town, the Porte des Tours, was used at the beginning of the 14th century as a prison for some of the Knights Templar, who in their captivity cut strange graffiti on the stone of their cells – an example of which is on the cottage chimney piece. The beauty of Domme lies not only in its location but in the yellow sandstone from which its buildings are constructed, as well as the colourful flowers and vines on their balconies and staircases
